Metallica in Irvine on May 17th 2008

The Verizon Wireless Amphitheater played host to a "roast" and "fiesta" this past weekend. A roast of pure weenies! Many of you know what I am talking about. Amongst all the "weenie" bands (that aren't really worth mentioning on Moshking.com) stood one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands of all time, METALLICA!
Metallica hit the stage at about 9:30, after the sun went down along with the 100 degree weather. They opened up with the Cliff Burton inspired song, "Creeping Death." After the song James Hetfield comes up to the microphone and shouts, "GIMME FUEL GIMME FIRE, GIMME THAT WHICH I DESIRE!" and the band goes into "Fuel". A little later in the show, an acoustic guitar appears on stage. James gets behind the acoustic and after a little doodling, he starts the intro to "Unforgiven".
The night went on and the sold out crowd was into every minute of it. They all sang along to Metallica favorites like "Harvester of Sorrow", "Fade to Black", and "Master of Puppets". The lights on the stage then went dark. All of a sudden sounds of helicopters, gun fire, and bombs exploding filled the air. James then hits the stage with the intro to "One" of their 1988 album "…And Justice For All". This song has gotten very popular amongst gamers since its appearance in the new Guitar Hero video game. After "One", they went into "Enter Sandman". A funny thing happened after they finished Sandman. The crowd got up, and started to head for the exits. Because most people at the show have never actually seen Metallica live, they thought the show was over. As some people (mostly posers who "won" their tickets on the radio station) headed for the exits, James, Kirk, Lars, and Rob came back on stage and start to play the intro to Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills", just the intro though. After having a little fun with that James gets on the mic and
shouts "So Fucking What" and they go into their cover of the Anti-No Where League song "So What!" The whole crowd from the upper sections then rushed the pit. Metallica ended the night with "Seek and Destroy" off their debut album "Kill `Em All".
Throughout the whole show Metallica was on the spot. Kirk was busting out every solo with so much feeling. He is by far one of the best guitarists in Heavy Metal. James' singing was great. He might have messed up a couple of lyrics, but who doesn't, that's what makes it a true live show. If not, it would be like listening to a CD. Lars can still beat the drums like a mad man. Rob Trujillo is one of the greatest bassist to watch on stage. His stage presence is so entertaining and his bass skills are phenomenal. Metallica is and always has been hailed as one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands of all time. Despite a lot of criticism over the years, they continue to sell out arenas and sell millions of albums. Their shows are amongst the best to watch live. After over 25 years of playing live shows, they can still out play and outperform many newer bands. I think every Metal-Head should experience at least one Metallica show in their life time. But I suggest it's a true Metallica show, not a show put on by a poser radio station to get ratings up. Overall Metallica was great. I cannot wait to hear their new album which is due out in September, and to see them live again in October of this year.
