Destruction & Krisiun at the Key Club on March 24th 2009

The first band up was, Night Terror, not bad for an opening act. They had strong burst’s every now and then but nowhere near often enough. The drummer doubles as the singer and does ok, but they would probably be better off adding a front man. From 1 to 10, I have to give this set a strong 6.
Next up was Deception. I was really looking forward to seeing them again as I keep hearing good things about them. Unfortunately, they were ok at best. I think they suffered from the crowd which at the time was fairly dead, even with me trying to rile them up. Still, they do have potential. I’ll have to give them another chance. Tonight though, they get a 6.5, maybe a 7.
Taking Over was next. Finally were getting some serious thrashing going on. It took about 3 songs for them to loosen up this crowd, but now we have pits and even some chicks are head banging. Best set so far. I’d rate them around 8 or 9.
Let me say Mantic Ritual really sounded great. Good, clean thrash (almost black) metal sound. Very fast riffs, great drumming, good tempo changes and they play as a unit, very tight and good timing by all. Now for the tough part. Bluntly, there too pretty for my taste. Way too much Armored Saint/Warrant/80’s style hair whipping going on for me. I lived thru the 80’s and saw what that did to the scene. Now I’m not cock blocking or anything like that. These guys are talented and their sleeveless look is gonna get them a lot of “action” which I have no problem with. I just prefer my metal ugly. 3 years from now if we’re stuck in the middle of a (god forbid) Glam/Speed metal revolution, then I was wrong. But I hope not. Anyway, they do shred and they were still good enough for me to give them an 8, maybe 8.5.
Up next was Krisiun. I must explain that I prefer thrash metal to heavy death metal. So, I was not too impressed with these 3 death dealers. Their guitar and bass both had a really bad/low sound (not load enough for that amount of distortion) and I just don’t feel non-stop double bass drumming makes for good music. There mix was off and it came out like a never ending drum roll. Like most death metal bands, vocals are my biggest problem. Tonight was no different. There front man’s growling was so rough, it drowned out the rest of the band. They did shred thru most of the set and did have the whole floor spinning from beginning to end. But, these guys just don’t play my kind of music. That being said, it would not be fair for me to rate them. So, on to Destruction.
Now this is what brought my lazy ass out to Hollywood on a Tuesday night. I have seen Destruction three times before and have never been disappointed with their live show. After all these years, can they still bring it? The answer to that is YES they can. From the opening riffs of Bestial Invasion to the closing of classics like Mad Butcher and Total Disaster, these three Metal Gods tore the fucking Key Club apart. They hit this packed crowed over and over again with classics of old and great new songs as well. It was total aggression. People were being carried out of the pits (I got a busted lip) and the frenzy was nonstop. Lead Singer Schmier added to this by telling everyone they were recording this show for an upcoming live release. Looking forward to that. They were on stage for at least an hour and a half and it never got dull. The crowd never stopped and neither did Destruction. For my money, this is still one of the best live bands of all time. There’s a reason there called legends. Definitely 10 out of 10.
